GSASC Political Action Committee

Dear Colleague,

Imagine what our health care delivery system would be like without ASCs:  higher costs to our patients, their employers, and the government; less efficiency and more patient dissatisfaction; and poorer outcomes.  Such is the system our tax exempt hospitals would foster with their efforts to maintain the CON laws and their efforts to further restrict the rules governing LNRs.  GSASC has played a pivotal role in combating the Department of Community Health’s efforts to change the rules and regulations for CON and LNR.  GSASC has also lobbied successfully for creation of the Certificate of Need Study Commission which is charged with reporting to the 2007 General Assembly on the effectiveness and costs of the current CON program.  In fact, GSASC’s past President, Melvin Deese, MD serves as a member of the Commission.  While the 2006 legislative session was a relatively quite one for ASC issues, the 2007 session is expected to be a critical one for the future of ASCs in Georgia.  With your help, GSASC can be competitive in this battle.  What can you do?

Join our SurgPAC.  Through SurgPAC we can accomplish two important things:

    1. Thank our friends in the Georgia legislature and make sure they return to office; and
    2. Build a war chest to elect new legislators who understand the advantages of a free market and who are friendly to ASCs.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen aggressive tactics employed by the Georgia Hospital Association and the Alliance of Community Hospitals to prevent new ASCs from opening as well as successful attempts to close existing ASCs!  Suits have been filed against the DCH challenging CON and LNR applications.  This forces the DCH to withdraw the LNR until the suit is settled, meanwhile shutting the doors of those ASCs.

Never before has it been so important for GSASC to have a strong voice in state politics and we need your help!  GSASC’s PAC fund, SurgPAC, helps ensure that friends of our industry are elected to office.  These elected friends are all that stand between your ASC and higher taxes, crushing regulations, more restrictive CON rules, attacks on your center’s LNR and possible closure of your ASC.

Please complete the attached form and return it with your check.  Whether you decide to give at home or at the office, join now!  The future of your ASC will depend on it.

Sincerely,

Sid Moore, MD

P.S.  SurgPAC can accept individual of corporate contributions.  Give today.  Help us continue to work on your behalf!
